Coffee is one of those necessary items in our routine. It keeps us parents running at nearly full speed, and we worship regularly. I couldn’t be as good of a parent if I didn’t have it, which I am entirely okay with. This post will be added to the coffee experiment page, which will be a log of all the coffee recipes I have concocted. I hope this delicious cinnamon coffee recipe is the first of many to grace these pages. I love a good experiment and I love good coffee. WIN/WIN!
Cinammon in Coffee
Cinnamon is one of the first spices I added to coffee. It adds a nice cinnamon note to the brew, but it’s more complex than that. I wholeheartedly recommend trying the following and letting me know your thoughts. It is especially nice for cold coffee as the cinnamon taste covers some of the more bitter notes in cold coffee.
Some studies suggest cinnamon to have nice health benefits for stabilizing sugar levels throughout the day. So, on top of the added roasty flavor, it could also be helping avoid the peaks and valleys we all experience throughout the day as we eat. The results differ depending on the study you look at, but you can check this nice article for an overview of the results if you’re curious. Even if the results are inconclusive, if you enjoy the taste of cinnamon coffee, then enjoy the possibility that it could be better than just tasty.
Now, there is a component in cinnamon (Coumarin) which can be toxic in high doses. The good news is it’s not very water-soluble, so extracting the flavor from the cinnamon with the coffee grounds is the ideal way to add cinnamon to coffee.
Ingredients and Equipment
I am not a fan of unnecessarily complicated preparations of any recipe unless it yields some wildly better results. Think of it as the 80/20 of food preparation. Anyway, our current go to for coffee is the McCafe Premium Roast. Its a very standard coffee with no obnoxious bitterness, without being bland. I can also set it to the Amazon subscribe and Save, which I am a big fan of. Set it, forget it.
For the cinnamon, I am not overly picky. You will certainly get a fresher cinnamon flavor by grinding your whole sticks into the coffee grounds. Even better, you could add the cinnamon stick (1/2 inch) to your coffee grinder and grind it with the beans. That will absolutely be the best way to prepare this recipe.
That said, I am never going to do that. Two kids or more means the simple pleasures in life will have to do. So, ground cinnamon on ground coffee is good enough.
